Many times it’s because they are too highly fragranced, my facial skin doesn’t like to be perfumed and usually responds to heavy fragrances with irritation and redness. Other times it’s because the moisturizers are too heavy, some are downright greasy, continued use usually results in tiny bumpy breakouts that disappear within a few days after I stop using the department store moisturizer. In one case (Clinique) the toner was way too harsh, causing burning irritation and redness. My skin does much better with herbal-based products such as Revitol as well as drugstore skin care lines like Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, PhisoDerm, St. Ives, Alpha Hydrox, and drugstore sunscreens.
I don’t put too much stock in skincare recommendations from department store counter personnel. They may mean well but they are sales people representing one company’s products, not skincare experts. Since their primary goal is to simply make a sale they don’t necessarily recommend the *best* products for your skin, instead what they are doing is trying to find the closest fit within their own line’s product range.
