Ever heard of Dermabrasion? Well, this ablative surgery procedure is for physically removing the epidermis and dermis of the skin. The removal is done in a controlled fashion using a fine wire brush or a diamond fraise.
You know, this technique is also widely used for removing facial rhytids and for treating various other skin conditions. Make no mistake, dude. Dermabrasion is one of the best acne treatments available in the market. As you know that the procedure produces ablation. The latter helps skimming the damaged dermis and epidermis and rejuvenates the skin.
By the way, don’t forget the necessary precautionary measures before and after dermabrasion. For example, you need to have a pre-surgery consultation with your surgeon. One idea is to have a realistic idea about the surgery outcome. And he will also give you the preparatory suggestions.
Besides, you two will jointly decide the required extent of the dermabrasion surgery for acne scar removal.
Then you have to share your medical history with the surgeon. On the basis of that the surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. For example, you have been taking a medication. The surgeon might ask you to discontinue it. For example you have been taking Accutane for last 18 months. You will have to stop it, and have to wait for six months before going for dermabrasion.
Then there are many herbal supplements – interacting with the anesthesia – may cause problems for the procedure. It is because of their blood thinning properties.
The doctor also must know if you are using any anti-depressants, as the latter may magnify the anesthesia effects.
Among other preparations there is the application of prescribed ointments in the area. For example you may need to apply Retin-A to the area.
Are you prone to cold sores? Then the doctor might prescribe you antiviral pills surrounding the date of the dermabrasion.
And man, you must eat healthy for the period prior to the operation. And supplement with lots of rest.
You also need to avoid unprotected sun exposure (for at least two months) and smoking (for a week or two).
After dermabrasion you need intensive acne skin care. The surgeon will have you put a compress on the treated area to decrease any stinging that you may be feeling after the anesthetic wears off. At the same time you will be given specific acne skin care instructions that are indicated for their specific situation and the successful treatment of their acne scars or other skin conditions.
There will be bleeding with the thawing of the skin. The surgeon will use various biologic and nonbiologic sterile dressings to stop the bleeding and cover the wound. The type and timing of the dressing will depend on the surgeon.
In all probability you will have a hydrocolloid dressing that will be changed daily for 5-7 days.
You might also be given additional medications like antiviral agents (both before and after dermabrasion) and corticosteroids, if there are no contraindications.
You might experience redness, swelling, skin crusting for 7 to 10 days. There is likely to be a tingling, burning, or aching in the operated area. In case there is pain, the surgeon might prescribe medications like acetaminophen (paracetamol) with codeine.
Be very careful in case you have an open dressing system. In tha case make sure that the area is not touched by anybody else other than your physician. Got it?
For one week after dermabrasion be very careful with the bandage. In the weeks following the procedure the surgeon might replace your bandage with the application of a prescribed ointment.
Call the doctor in case you find a mild skin redness persisting even after 10 days of the operation, and/or if you find the operated area is getting increasingly raised and itchy.
You might have to take a course of tetracycline if you have had acne in the past.
Always try to avoid sunlight for one month. Otherwise your skin may turn blotchy or darkened in color.
And avoid drinking and smoking during the process.
Are you worried about the cost? Forget it. The dermabrasion cost is not meant only for rich guys. The total cost will be somewhere between $2000 and $4000.
